Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. The family of Jill Scott consisted of both her maternal grandparents and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she was accepted into Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. She hoped she would become an English secondary school teacher. However, her dream was short-lived when she quit school after three years of studies and was an aide to teachers. Her career began by performing live poems and her own work. Then she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. The singer was at the Roots performance. After that, she was able to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience as performers on The Canada touring of Broadway musical production Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
